Fadnavis to Take Oath as Maharashtra Chief Minister on December 5
Devendra
Fadnavis, leader of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), has been unanimously
elected as the leader of the Maharashtra BJP Legislative Party. Following this
decision, Fadnavis will be sworn in as the Chief Minister of Maharashtra on
December 5, 2024.
The
swearing-in ceremony will take place on Thursday at Mumbai’s Azad Maidan, with
Prime Minister Narendra Modi scheduled to attend the event. Fadnavis’s name for
the top post was finalized during the BJP core committee meeting held ahead of
the legislative party gathering. Prominent figures such as Union Minister
Nirmala Sitharaman and former Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani participated
in the committee discussions.
Maharashtra BJP’s Political Strategy
Before
the legislature party meeting, BJP leader Sudhir Mungantiwar confirmed that the
Mahayuti alliance partners would meet Maharashtra’s Governor CP Radhakrishnan
to formally stake their claim to form the state government.
In a
significant development, Fadnavis met with caretaker Chief Minister Eknath Shinde
at his official residence, ‘Varsha,’ in Mumbai, on Tuesday. This marked the
first in-person meeting between the two since their talks in Delhi last week
regarding the formation of a new government. Although the specifics of their
discussion remain unclear, political observers suggest that it may have been an
effort by the BJP to reassure its ally, Shiv Sena, as both parties prepare for
the upcoming ceremony.
Swearing-In Ceremony
The
swearing-in ceremony is set to be a momentous occasion, with approximately
2,000 VVIPs and 40,000 supporters expected to attend. Key political figures,
including several Union Ministers, as well as 19 Chief Ministers and Deputy
Chief Ministers from other states, are also anticipated to be present. BJP
leader Prasad Lad has described the event as a “historic moment” for
Maharashtra.
The Path Ahead for the Alliance
While the
BJP emerged victorious in the November 20 Maharashtra elections, securing 132
out of 288 assembly seats, the process of distributing portfolios among the
alliance partners could prove challenging. Leaders from Shiv Sena have made it
clear that, in keeping with alliance conventions, their party should receive
the home portfolio, especially as the Chief Minister’s position is being held
by the BJP.
With the Mahayuti
coalition—comprising the BJP, Shiv Sena led by Eknath Shinde, and Ajit Pawar’s
Nationalist Congress Party (NCP)—holding a commanding majority of 230 seats,
the political landscape in Maharashtra is set for a new chapter.

TN HEADLINES 24 INSIGHTS
Devendra Fadnavis’s
return as Maharashtra’s Chief Minister is both significant and contentious.
With his prior experience, he brings familiarity and political acumen to
navigate the state’s complex political landscape. His earlier tenure focused on
infrastructure, economic growth, and governance reforms, signaling a desire for
stability.
However, his return
raises concerns about the BJP-led Mahayuti alliance’s internal divisions,
particularly with the Shiv Sena (Shinde faction). Managing these alliances
while addressing Maharashtra’s economic challenges, unemployment, and social
issues will be crucial for Fadnavis. If he can maintain balance and focus on
the state’s pressing needs, his leadership could make a positive impact on
Maharashtra’s future.
